Steve serves as chair of the firm’s Governmental and Regulatory Affairs practice group. This group is responsible for representing clients before governmental bodies, including the U.S. Congress, departments and agencies of the federal government, state legislatures and departments and agencies of state and local government. He has extensive experience working in Washington, D.C., Montgomery, Alabama and in other states.
Steve’s practice includes a special focus on insurance regulatory and legislative matters, where he has primarily represented insurance companies and institutional investors. He also serves as counsel to the Alabama Life and Disability Insurance Guaranty Association.
In addition, Steve has represented a wide-range of clients with diverse business interests. These include banks, savings and loans, insurers and related financial services institutions in the U.S. Congress and before state and federal regulatory agencies. He has also represented health insurers, hospitals, physicians, and other healthcare providers in the U.S. Congress and before the Department of Health and Human Services, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and other governmental bodies. He also represents clients with manufacturing and distribution interests.
Prior to Maynard Cooper, Steve served as Vice President and Associate General Counsel of Torchmark Corporation, an insurance holding company, and before that, he served as Associate Vice President of Sonat Inc., an interstate natural gas pipeline and energy company.
